During the economic crisis in Lebanon, one of the significant challenges consumers faced was the implementation of capital control measures by banks in late 2019. These measures included setting withdrawal and transfer limits on US Dollar deposits. 

The result of these strict capital control measures caused many to lose trust in the Lebanese banking sector and significantly increased the number of unbanked individuals to about 55% of the population.

Wink Pay understood the dynamics of Lebanon’s banking sector and the need for an innovative experience to address customer needs. They signed a strategic partnership with Codebase Technologies and Visa to create a payments mobile app that features modern banking functionalities like digital onboarding, instant virtual and physical Visa prepaid card issuance, and an innovative wallet-based UI, enabling customers to onboard quickly without needing a bank account or initial deposit, and transact from anywhere at any time.

The new service offers over 5 million Lebanese people a means to overcome the struggles in utilizing their existing debit and credit cards for purchases made abroad and online.
